Since 2002, Serbia has celebrated Statehood Day on February 15 and 16, in commemoration of two important historical dates.
There is a day when the First Serbian Uprising against the Turks was started at the meeting in Orašac in 1804 under the leadership of Đorđe Petrović-Karađorđe.
The second day when, in Kragujevac in 1835, the first modern, and for that time, extremely liberal Constitution of the Principality of Serbia was adopted and confirmed by oath.
Although they are celebrated on February 15 and 16, both events took place on the religious holiday of the Epiphany, according to the Julian calendar.
This religious holiday is one of the 12 biggest Christian holidays and is celebrated as a memory of the day when the Mother of God first brought the newborn Christ into the temple to dedicate him to God. It is celebrated on the fortieth day after Christmas.
